MASTERS ON THE MOVE

MASTERS ATHLETES IN SOUTH AFRICA MOVE INTO TOP GEAR FOR NATIONALS

With only the national championships remaining, masters athletes in South Africa are moving into top gear over the next few weeks leading up to the S.A. Masters championships in May and then finally for those who will be participating in the World Masters Athletics Championships in August in Lyon, France.

Shaun Bownes (44) showed good form at the CGA masters championships when he won the 110m hurdles M40-44 comfortably in a time of 14.49.  Last year he won the World Masters Indoors title over 60m hurdles in Budapest.  At this stage its unknown if he will be participating in Lyon, as athletes have until 4 June to register.

South African sprinters  have especially come to the fore at various masters provincial championships held over the past few months and the sparks could fly at the nationals.   The increased interest in masters athletics could also be due to the World Masters Championships this year scheduled to take place in Lyon, France in August.

Shaun Bownes, Marcus la Grange (past Olympian) Sergio Mullins, Chris Harmse, Zola Budd-Pieterse (past Olympian), Adri Schoeman (past Olympian) and many other athletes who have moved up into the masters ranks over the past few years, are expected to grace the track and field at the national championships, scheduled for 15 & 16 May 2015 in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth.

Marcus la Grange, recently won the 100m masters M35-39 at the recent W.P. Masters championships and is also expected to compete in the sprints at the nationals, but has his sights set on the next World Championships in Perth, Australia in October 2016.

Sergio Mullins (35) is the new kid on the masters block in the sprints and might want to prove a point or two in front of his home crown in P.E.  It would be interesting to see him and Marcus la Grange (37) up against each other in the sprints.  However, they may not have things all their own way, as there are a number of up and coming young masters sprinters who are hungry for competition.
